I recently stumbled across a recipe that called for Coca-Cola in barbecue sauce! Initially, I was really thrown off by it, but with a little more thought I figured it wasn’t all that strange. I mean, coke is sweet and tart, so it makes sense— right?
Even then, for pretty much all my foods I’m much more into salty and savory than sweet, so I thought the recipe would need some tweaking. Rather then creating the typically sweet and smoky Coca-Cola sauce, I opted for a spicy sauce with a hint of sweet!
Here’s what you need:
- 8 oz Coca-Cola
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire
- 2 tbsp steak sauce
- 2 tbsp hot sauce (I use Frank’s Red Hot hot wing sauce)
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 2 tbsp black pepper
All you need to do is bring the sauce to a boil, and then let it simmer for somewhere between 5 – 10 minutes, until it reduces a little bit and thickens up. If you do prefer the sweet and smokey taste, add brown sugar instead of hot sauce and add some liquid smoke, but don’t turn on this recipe! It’s easy and delicious. It does pair best with chicken and pork, but give it a try with anything. Happy grilling!
