5 Easy Ketchup Upgrades

December 12, 2016 by Kamado Mary Leave a Comment

I have never been a huge fan of ketchup, as weird as that sounds, and I’ve always been more of a mustard-gal. I really didn’t know that there were ways to upgrade your ketchup until recently, when I visited a restaurant that had blueberry ketchup.

That was still a big no for me (just being honest) but it made me curious what other types of ketchup are out there, and if I would like any of them. So, today I’d like to give you guys 5 of my favorite ways to upgrade your ketchup!

Southern

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup minced sauteed onion
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp cumin or to taste

Chipotle Lime

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 can of chiles in adobo
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp cilantro (optional)

Sweet and Sour

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp pineapple juice (optional)

Spicy Mexican

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Tabasco sauce
  • 1 tbsp jalapeno sauce
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cumin or to taste

Bonus Secret Burger Sauce

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic (optional)

I sometimes mix just ketchup and mustard for my fries, and just ketchup and mayo for my burgers, but I know I am a little on the picky side 😉

All of these recipes should yield you between 1 and 2 cups of your special ketchup. While it’s fine to just mix everything with a whisk, for the southern and chipotle lime you’ll want to either mince the onions and peppers very small, blend them, or make sure you have a bottle that can accommodate chunks! Other than that, it’s easy peasy.

Do you guys have any special condiments that you use? Share with me in the comments!
